The two headlands converse as they have done for ever. I wanted a concept of communication from a distance, the way men on the village square benches converse from one bench to another. Everything fell into place very quickly and I had the painting almost done, alla prima, in a short time. Tweaking came a little later. The angle I chose for the protrusion of the cliffs into the sea is a bit of liberty with marine perspective! The contours and the colours are distinctive but I altered the actual image to make the scene a more universal seascape. The actual changing shades within the blue sky and the darker value of the sea are a mix of strong brushstrokes and careful blending. I opted for a minimalist rendering of the scene in the interest of keeping the focus on the contrasting colours between sea and land.
The inspiration was from sketches I had done the day before on the South coast of Malta.
