This work captures a moment of individual reflection within a vast expanse. The tiny, solitary figure at the base of the canvas serves as a powerful metaphor for the human spirit standing before the infinite unknown. The “West-East” fusion of styles creates a bridge between cultural philosophies, evoking the Japanese concept of yūgen, beauty felt more than seen. This work was painted alla prima and then finished with transparent glazes. Soft contrasts and generous negative space create a seascape of stillness. The interplay of warm and cool tones evokes an atmosphere of harmony between land, sea, and light. For me, it reflects the Japanese reverence for the notion of impermanence, inviting the viewer into a space of quiet contemplation and timeless beauty. This is my effort to seamlessly combine my Western tradition of painting seascapes with Eastern tranquillity.
This artwork is more than a landscape. Bathed in a soft, ethereal light that radiates from a central, mist-shrouded sun, it evokes feelings of wonder, humility, and quiet hope. It is a reminder that even in the difficult journeys of our daily life, there is a quiet strength in simply being present.
