The vertical composition invites reflection about how a simple thought, in this case imagined as moving upwards, enters a space where it can develop, break up into smaller fragments, each fragment taking on an independent life. These fragments are of different shapes and sizes, and they show different shades of color. Warm and cool colours interact, texture is varied, and the technique is alla prima. I see this work in an inspiring environment, an invitation to connect with one’s own inner ascent, a compelling focal point for meaningful conversation. This work can, however, also be seen at a different level, independently of what inspired me to paint it. It may suggest a journey towards understanding or even transcendence
A conversation between friends in an Italian cafe. The discussion started with the weather, progressed to politics, moved to the latest exploits of the Italian Serie “A” team Juventus, and when I left, they were arguing over the exact moment when you should add the eggs to a “ carbonara” pasta plate. I wanted to translate this into the way a single initial strand of thought breaks up into independent fragments as soon as it meets language in conversations with others. Thoughts are so random and yet so meaningful within the same conversation.
