Overview

I aimed here at a meditative seascape where Western light merges with Japanese restraint. A distant landform, faint and almost dissolving, embodies the principle of yūgen—the beauty of the barely seen.

Gentle tonal shifts evoke a balance between presence and emptiness, while the gradation of sea and sky echoes French atmospheric traditions. This work invites the viewer into stillness, offering a contemplative pause: dark versus light, white versus black, peace versus uncertainty.

Inspiration

A monochromatic take on a typical Mediterranean harbour twilight scene, where the land is light and is immersed in darkness.We would like to think that twilight promises a peaceful night to precede a calm morning. But this is not universally true.

This work reflects both the Western tradition of atmospheric depth and the Japanese pursuit of serene simplicity.
