Serenity often comes invisibly and in silence so here I opted for a sense of ascent but no drama.
The upward shift is built of parallel lines, the tonal shifts are gradual. There is no climax but I am
dealing with the moments that lead up to it. I used gradations of light and muted tonal shifts as well as translucent glazes to bind the composition.
In the work I did not simply wish to invite a generic personal Interpretation however. I wanted to give a visual picture of quiet hope and emotional strength. We are individuals and as individuals I wish the viewer to reflect on the difficulty of achieving serenity.
A day when the news was all bad, with civil wars, overnight bombings, and ongoing genocidal campaigns dominated the news. Sigmund Freud was right: “ homo homini lupus est. ( man is a wolf to other men) . But the news is on the outside. Each of us deserves serenity. Let us try then to devise a personal way of achieving it.
