This painting evokes the hush of an ancient olive grove. Light filters through the leaves to a place between spaces, where the mind rests, and the spirit listens. The alla prima technique gives spontaneity, while layered glazes hint at the grove’s age and stillness. A glow of softly shifting light through the tree trunks draws the viewer into the heart of the composition, offering warmth and a sense of hope. It is a place remembered, where silence speaks, and the land holds its breath.

I never tire of examining the shape of olive tree trunks and their convolutions. Most of the many olive trees in my garden are in rows, but I came across this suggestive group of old ladies in a clearing. The curves of the trees suggest to me the gracefulness of dancers, classical ballerinas. You need the permission of the old gentle ladies to walk through their dance floor!
