Though recognisably coastal, this painting functions as a memory rather than a literal depiction. I used muted colours and soft edges with minimal detail to move away from actual realism. This encourages contemplation rather than narrative. The town becomes an impression, the boats a recurring motif of stability. This work bridges Western landscape painting with Eastern sensitivity to suggestion and impermanence. Western landscape traditions inform the handling of light and sky, while Japanese sensibilities emerge through a quiet balance of tone and colour.Viewers may bring their own experiences of place and memory into the scene.
It makes no real difference to me which the actual town was, as I often work from photographs and sketches. I prefer to work on a theme which transforms actual places into emotional memory.
